My interest in Portuguese migrant women in Australia dates back to my undergraduate days at the University of New South Wales in the early 1980's, when I was an Arts student majoring in Sociology. This interest was intensified by my employment at the Portuguese community as a Welfare Worker when I came in contact with many Portuguese women workers who used the ethno-services in the community. 


In 1985 I began an exploratory study of Portuguese women with family responsibilities to determine to which extent their needs were met by the resources available to them in the community. The data collected were so interesting and extensive that I decided to take a further step and carry out the present study which concerns Portuguese women in the workforce. 


The academic literature on the Portuguese in Australia is almost non-existent (especially on Portuguese women), and the little which has been written or published is not readily available. This iBook, a copy of my thesis from 1990, is an attempt to address this problem.
